Paul,

I am afraid they already are. Check out http://www.freedom2measure.org

(Be aware that they do take a cheap shot at the USMA and a person in it)

Subject: [USMA:36129] Will metricaiton be perceived as handing over U.S. national sovereignty?

A fear of many Americans is that the trend toward globalization of the economy includes some kind of surrender of U.S. national sovereignty. We are seeing some of this in the current concerns over Dubai and the port deal. I often wonder if this issue will rear its ugly head on the day that U.S. metrication reaches center stage in the media, and how great a public relations problem we metrication supporters in America will have with those who see the "international" system of units as an international political encroachment upon the stars and stripes. Cf. The Simpsons: "Who keeps the metric system down?"
