I retract my previous statements, Pat. I no longer blame the Australian government for demanding the metrication of the country.

Dear Jim,

This poses a problem for both of us as we consider the metrication of the USA.

When we accept the idea that the metric system was not introduced into Australia by mandate then we are stuck with the questions:

* Why was metrication in Australia so successful – and so quick?

* Why is metrication in the USA apparently so unsuccessful – and so slow?

I will mull some more on these questions.

Thanks for the impetus to explore these questions further; I think they are important. I would also appreciate any advice or thoughts from others on this list as I intend to compile the results.

Note: I have changed the name of this thread to make it easier to follow.

Cheers,
