Excellently written, in my opinion. I was interested to hear on NPR that a senior Chinese financial type had announced that the US was "now" (i.e., after the recent financial mess) on a "prolonged downward" drift, or something very close to that. Our refusal to even bring up the issue of metrication at the highest levels is an indication of this. In China they would just do things like coin/currency reform without the endless debate, etc. I am definitely not a fan of Chinese undemocratic government, but they do get things done, whereas we have meaningless political posturing and image management.
A recent item re China in the lead, again:

I won't mention coins/currency again!

I hate to say it but this argument sounds much like people who oppose finishing the job of converting to metric in the USA. "We don't want to change. We want to keep using our pounds, feet, miles, and quarts. It's our choice and we should have that choice."
