ALSA is a pain to get setup from what I have heard. I have the a VIA
soundcard on my laptop and it works just fine with the via_82xxx module.
I suggest that you get OSS set up first. OSS has been around longer and
it works on my system without a hitch. If you have an AMD cpu then I
will be more than happy to send you my working kernel. (It is compiled
with AMD specific compiler flags, so it won't work on Intel chips.)

Also, do an "ls -l /dev/dsp" to make sure that the device is there. If
it isn't then try "ls -l /dev/sound/dsp" and see if that is there. If
not then your problem is with devfs (if you use it). Also make sure
that you have execute permissions on /dev/dsp.
