I successfully installed the RH 8 openoffice rpms on RH 7.3. Install
the following rh 8 packages:

glibc-common
glibc-2.2.93 (take whatever is most current from the redhat 8 updates)
libstdc++
compat-libstdc++ (for all the kde apps)
fontconfig
Xft
openoffice-*

You may have to upgrade the compilers too (installing compat versions if
you want access to gcc 2.96 still).

All in all, it was pretty simple. I didn't need to upgrade XFree86
(which was already 4.2, I think).

By this point you're almost to redhat 8.0, by the way, and upgrading all
the way involves simply installing corresponding rh 8 packages. By the
way, I've upgraded distros from 6.2 to 7.3 to 8.0 using this manual
method.
