One of my co-workers uses Windows with Hummingbird. When he connects to a Solaris machine and starts an Xsession he can have a transparent background so that he gets an entire desktop with CDE and mix it with his Windows desktop. He moves his Start bar to the left of the screen and rearranges icons so they don't conflict. As a result, CDE and Windows work together and when he clicks on something the appropriate desktop responds.
He's now trying to do the same with Linux, specifically RH 8.
