Local folders are always used when your protocol is pop3.  I've really
only ever used imap, so I don't use local folders either.  However I
don't know how to turn off the local folders by either hiding them or
removing them.

Okay.  Go to the summary view.  Then do tools->settings.  Then you can
check the folders from any of the views that you want in the summary. 
Uncheck the local ones.  Works pretty good.
