If you haven't got that fixed yet, I may be able to help, if you're
problem is with your graphics card.  On a couple separate occasions I've
had trouble with X-Windows and NVIDIA cards that resulted in exactly the
behavior you're talking about, which is quite a pain.  Is that what
you're using, by any chance?
