Of course the best solution is to use Linux. You can still get WordPerfect 8 for Linux for free. I had my wife using WordPerfect on

I know this is a really stupid question, but... where on earth from? I've downloaded it before for free, and also StarOffice, but now it
seems as if Sun and Corel have suddenly reconsidered the whole free
software thing. Like I said, I'm probably missing something obvious,

Note that this was always only free as in beer, I mean postum. I'm sorry that it's not available anymore. That was a pretty good program.

but recently I looked around for quite a while and what few links I
could find had all been discontinued. Even download.com said something
to the effect that "this title is no longer available", and at sun.com
the only download option I could find is if you pay with a credit card.

StarOffice isn't available for free anymore but there are some little caveats to that:

Universities may use it for free for computers that they own and control. BYU does have a copy of this. If you're a CSR assistant of some type you know who to contact about that, I won't mention his name 'cause I don't think he wants students knocking on his door.

At the Sun/EDS/GM thing the Sun rep said he'd let us all use StarOffice for free. I'll dig up his contact info and ask him if he'll make good on that offer.

If it turns out we can use it for free I have install files at the office I'd be happy to share with anyone who brings me a CD-R and shows me their student ID. I'll let you know.

At Corel's website the only thing they're offering for free is
photo-editing software, which is nice, but it's not a word processor. Is
there some hidden cache? I'd love to know the location. I like Open
Office, but it's not really the best and it's definately not the most
compatible.

Despite what people on this list may be telling you right now, what you say is absolutely true. Sun's StarOffice has better (proprietary) conversion filters, including their Word filter. The Open Source filter isn't really up to par yet. They have an okay WordPerfect filter too. Not great, but okay.
