In order for it work reliably for me, I had to uninstall all the old redhat KDE packages. To find them all, do a rpm -qa | grep ^k , and then look through the list, and make sure you don't removed the extra things that get put in there (like kernel, kudzu, etc. :). Once you've done that, doing an apt-get install kde3 should do the trick. It's not perfect, but with a little tweaking, it works great.
