I know. I should stop too, but IT majors, (and IS for that matter I think, Ammon would know better than I), can get all the M$ products they want for free (as in root beer) (except Office).

Aside from the fact that we haven't actually run any metrics on it this reminds me of when someone benchmarked FreeBSD against Linux for mail handling. The FreeBSD guys were really upset about it, they sent all kinds of tweaks and patches to make it "fair". In the end the people who ran the tests reported, (not an exact quote) "FreeBSD tweaked and tuned as well as possible runs almost as fast as Linux with no tweaks whatsoever."

I'm not bashing FreeBSD either. If someone ever ported APT to FreeBSD I'd jump ship in a heartbeat. No wait, FreeBSD needs some better mirrors too. Most are painfully slow, especially after a release.

I need to try gentoo. :)

On second thought, maybe this would be unfair to the Windows team. They'd
have to do a fund-raiser during the competition just to afford the
licensing necessary to install the software.

Wow, time for me to shut up. I've already taken this thread to the pit as
is...

Seriously though if the windows side had RAID and GIG ethernet on the
RIS server I'll bet it would still be a close match. The real
competition is in how long it takes to configure the services
afterward.

Which is where Linux would take the lead. Two words: "tab completion".

Not to burst your bubble, but Windows has had tab completion since 2K, and it's on by default in XP.

The new bash completion stuff is really cool though. It can do stuff
like CVS module completion and filter possible completions by the type
of file the command you're using is expecting. If I type unzip and then
hit tab twice it can list only files that have a .zip extension for
example.

In theory the commandline interface should be faster for an expert.
Mice can really slow you down.

If you think that mice slow /you/ down try ratpoison:
