Sounds like you are being forced to use old versions of vim (i.e. pre-6)
which don't support color schemes. If upgrading is not an option, you
can either jump through hoops to set colors (an excercise in cut and
paste from my color scheme files - all the coloring is standard to older
versions it's just the loading mechanism that's new), or do without as
you have done.
