I admit that I was half joking when I suggested we change our name to
SLUG. But I'd like to see SLUG on the ballot.
SLUG - SLUG Linux Users Group
I agree that we should avoid long archaic acronyms. Going over
three or four letters is scary, and acronyms that can't be pronounced
can be just as bad. How do you pronounce UUG anyway?
I think SLUG has good points on all sides of the argument. How
cool would it be if we had a name like BLUE or SLUG. We'd be able to
speak about the club without having to pronounce each letter. "SLUG"
will be recognizable to the GNU crowd. I've never seen a recursive
acronym outside the open source world. Those in the open source
community will recognize a recursive acronym as part of the movement.
With "SLUG" our club would bear the name Linux in our acronym.
And if we don't want to alienated the Unix users we could have SLUG
stand for, "SLUG Linux & Unix Group". Who could ever think that a SLUG
club could possibly be exclusive. Heck, we'll take anybody, even slugs.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the fact that Linux is NOT Unix, at
least not technically. It is a Unix clone. That's why Gnu's Not Unix.
