Why 2/3 majority, and not just a simple majority? To bias the poll against changing the name?
This is what the club charter says, and if we are going to have a change like
If we're moving to the CS Dept anyway, doesn't that mean the club will cease to exist in its current form anyway?
There is an idea out there that the CS Dept is going to adopt us. I don't want to burst any bubbles, but this will probably not happen. In the past there were problems (don't ask about what they were, I don't know 100% of the story and it really doesn't matter) between our club and the department, and from what I hear they have decided that the only club they will support is the ACM because it is a local chapter of a national organization.
The charter states that "all amendments to this charter must be approved by the BYUSA club office." Will they approve us taking it out of BYUSA and into the CS Dept? That will require significant modifications to the charter, which 2/3 will have to approve, right?
We aren't out of BYUSA yet. See above.
I just don't understand why the charter has anything to do with it, if we're scrapping it anyway. Just kill the UUG and start up the BLUE under the CS Dept.
See above.
I really wish that we could be a CS department club, I just don't know if we can. Just to let everyone know, next week I'm going to have a chat with BYUSA and several departments around campus to see what our options are. It will probably take several weeks before we can really make any changes about who sponsors us but I'll keep you guys informed. If you have any information (such as contacts with high up people you know with any department that might be interested in working with us) please e-mail me off the list and tell me.
One more thing.... I have no opinion about what the name of the club will be (UUG or something else). I am trying to not be bias at all, in fact I'm not even going to vote on this change. I just want the group to decide and my final decision is what the group says through the poll. I, along with many others, including pro-change supporters, think having a 2/3 majority is very reasonable. I just want everyone to know that I am trying to be fair.
Time to go on a Geology field trip... maybe I'll see if they will sponsor us: "I hear you guys know a lot about silicon... want to know more?..." :-)
My major never get's mentioned in these discussions but this kind of thing is right up our alley. I'm in the IT program, in the School of Technology. It's a new major, and to be frank we're kind of teetering on the edge of becoming a little bit microsofty. It would be healthy to have a club like this be sponsored by one of our faculty. It would also be good to have some advocacy going on there. Next time we have booths up I'll have to man one in th CTB.
