Good advice. The only difference AT ALL between their /etc/rc.d directories
is that rc3.d has K09dm whereas rc5.d contains s30dm (I think that stands for
display manager), but both of them point to ../init.d/dm. Just to be sure,
I checked all the other link targets and they were also identical. inittab
doesn't have anything funny in it either.
Does anyone one now what the difference REALLY is between runlevel 3 and
runlevel 5? It seems like kde behaves identically under 3 as it did 5,
except that I login with a command prompt instead of a cheerful graphical
greeter. Is that it? I had assumed I couldn't run xwindows at all from
level 3, but low and behold it starts up just fine.
Please let me know if anyone can think of where else to check for differences
between 3 and 5. I've googled myself blue, and as far as I can tell I'm the
only person in the history of the world who's ever had this problem.

Aaah... wait. I just found that my right button isn't working again, after I
left for a while and came back, even though I started at level 3 and it
worked initially. Criminy. I guess that's not the solution I thought it
was. I wonder what on earth changed it??!?
