        Thanks for the tip, though it was pointed out to me last week and I fixed it.
And I also thank you for taking the time to explain in detail how to
accomplish this. I spent 400 hours initally searching for a way to change
the system time, and all the while that infuriating clock was there, smiling
smugly at me from kicker. I initially jury-rigged it by hex-editing the
kernel to bypass the hardware value by reading in the correct time through
the serial port via an interface I whipped up that used a simple radar device
constructed from an old radio and a modified fluorescent light to read the
minute and hour hands from an analog clock hung on the wall across the room.
To think, I could have avoided all that effort had I thought of trying to
click on the cute little clock on the screen. I felt so dumb when I found
out that alternate method (-;

        That's good advice though, honestly. I'll go ahead and do that. I just
hadn't bothered before. I figured my pc could keep decent enough track of
it's own time, and it mostly did. I was fiddling around with something else
that apparently changed it without my noticing (since the hourly time was
still accurate. I suppose that's what rdate or ntpd is for. What's
different about ntpd that makes it so much better? How does it better
prevent it from straying from a value it reads in every day or so?
