With both IMAP and POP you're using SMTP to send the email, so it seems like a client configuration problem to me. Are you running any sort of smtp after pop authentication? Or any other smtp auth? Have you tried writing your own SMTP message through telnet? What domains are you using and relaying? Can you included the full headers of the returned message?
