I was the one that asked, and you are right, there never was a good answer given. I found (on a freebsd website) that you could simply use nautilus to edit your menus by going to applications:/// but when that didn't work with RedHat I gave up. This explains why it didn't work. I found this guy's comment at the end most interesting:
