No, it ain't out yet, folks. I was just using RC2 to put together a
presentation, and I can say that version 1.1 is a marked improvement
over 1.0. I wanted a quick diagram of how GNU/Linux password
authentication works, and I was about to fire up dia for the job (as I
usually do). I decided instead to give it a shot as an embedded OLE
OO Draw object. Dang, that thing is slick! Multi-segmented lines,
snapping object alignment, shortcut submenu's managed by my window
manager, and other niceties make it something actually worth using.
It seems to lack persistent object interconnection; I might submit a
patch for that, but I have to take a closer look :-). Overlay with
other objects on the slide was nicely rendered too. Maybe these
features were in previous versions, but I remember the drawing tool to
be buggy with previous versions.

All those annoying font issues that previously plagued OpenOffice seem
to be worked over. You can launch OpenOffice without also launching
any kind of document. The list goes on. I used to wince a bit when I
suggested to others to try OO over MSOffice, because I knew about all
the subtle problems it suffered from. Once 1.1 has stabalized, no
more will I hesitate to suggest it.

I can't say that OO will ever draw me away from LaTeX and LyX as my
preferred wordprocessing application, but its presentation software,
spreadsheet, and (now) drawing utilities will be my first choice.

As in times past, we should be promoting OO first and foremost at the
booth in September. I hate to see students literally throw their
money away by purchasing MSOffice (or throw their ethics away by
bootlegging it or agreeing to its license). There is a booth
reserved, I hope?

Mike
