Amen.  I agree completely.  My siblings have started to use OpenOffice
on windows and linux.  For them, except for some minor MS Word import
issues (bullets don't work quite right across the translation), things
are great.  

A good example of how the open file format of OpenOffice rocks is to
take a look at  a very simple program, "imposter" which is a gtk-based
standalone OpenOffice Impress viewer.  All without any OO dependencies. 
Still missing a lot of things like transitions, but other than that it's
quite effective.
