Take a look in xdm-config for something like this:

! SECURITY: do not listen for XDMCP or Chooser requests
! Comment out this line if you want to manage X terminals with xdm
DisplayManager.requestPort:     0

and comment out that line.

There is no good way to encrypt a full X session (where your machine is 
just acting as an X terminal.  What you could do, however, is run an 
Xvnc instance *on the remote machine* and run vncviewer on your local 
system, directing the vnc connection over ssh or something like that.

Note that this adds a lot of load to the machine in question as it not 
only is running all your X clients, but the X server, too.  But for 
some situations, it's the best option.
