The two distros I have installed on my own machines are various versions of
Red Hat, and various versions of Mandrake.

I started with Mandrake 8.0, and I've used each one since then. The only
one I disliked was 8.2. Through Mandrake I learned much about Linux and
really liked the KDE interface.

When I bought my laptop, for some reason Lilo in Mandrake 8.2 would not
work, so Art Moore convinced me to try Red Hat 7.3. It was different and I
loved it. I considered switching entirely to Red Hat for all my machines.
But when 8.0 came out, I tried it and it was a disaster. Do searches on
google with Red Hat breaking KDE, and you'll see what I mean. I ended up
putting 7.3 back on it. I felt that I really had not given Red Hat 8 a
chance based on some comments from the UUG list, so when RH 9 came out, I
decided to give it a try. Again, I like KDE, and KDE in Red Hat 8 and 9 is
a complete disaster. I'll keep my rant for another day, but I tried, I
really tried to use Red Hat 9. I hated it. So by then Mandrake 9.1 was
out so I crossed my fingers and hoped that Lilo would work, and it did.

KDE issues aside, I feel most configuration tools in Mandrake (at least the
ones I use) are easier to use than Red Hat's. The one exception I remember
was the network configuration tool in Red Hat 7.3. I really liked it. At
this point I've gone beyond some of the tools, but I continue to be
impressed by what Mandrake has done to help the newbie move it Linux and to
make things I don't know how to do the "hacker way" really easy.

Also one thing that Mandrake has that RH doesn't is a program in the
installer to resize your WinDOS partition if you decide to dual (pun
intended) boot. And as of Mandrake 9.1, it works on NTFS.
