When you're having a conversation about impersonal things, then I'd agree that you should be able to be honest without worrying about someone taking offense. On the other hand, not everyone is able to make the distinction between a personal affront and a comment on something impersonal. With that in mind, it might be better to take into account the weaknesses of other people in this area and at least make an attempt at being nice.
