I really like lots of the things you have said, Steve. I use Gentoo on
my laptop and I've been using it for quite a while (the only people who
have been running it longer that I have that I know of on the UUG are
Derek Davis, Byron Clark, and Michael Brailsford). For my main system
it's great, and it IS a stable distro. But I would never run it on one
of my servers. Why? It's just my preference.

Give Gentoo a try, and if you like it, use it. But don't just do things
because they are "cool". If you like Redhat, use it. If you like Debian,
use it. If you like Mandrake, use it. If you like ChainSaw Linux, use
it. If you like Laser5 Linux, use it. The list goes on. [1]

I think that lots of the reasons that people have been moving to Gentoo
is because of hype, but personally I think it's the most well structured
distro I've used (and I've used quite a few). In the end we have to
remember that we're running the same OS and apps, and the distro isn't
as important as we might think. Until then I'll keep on hearing Jake and
Halcrow battle it out between Mandrake and Debian. ;-)

Just a few ideas to keep in mind.

-Evan
