For those of you who want to choose Gentoo for the "performance" reasons ; that compiling natively for your specific configuration will make things faster; here's an interesting post that came up on the debian-user list recently.

In the end, its all about your personal choice. I beleive that if it works for you, there's no better distro. You like RH, use RH, like Debian, use it... can't flame anyone for their distro choice (well, not ideally anyway =)
