I'm the first to agree that there seem to be more security holes than you can
shake a stick at in Microsoft's products, but sometimes I think that maybe
we're not being entirely fair to them in our *nix-worshipping zeal. The
various unices are mostly well written and highly "securable," but some day
when linux becomes the world's primary operating system the attacks will be
directed at it instead of windoze, and anyone who thinks that people won't
find many more flaws in its zillions of lines of code is crazy. We should be
honest and admit that a good part of the reason Microsoft is hit by so many
viruses is because they're really the only operating system worth spending
your time to attack if you want to get at most people. If we're not fair
about this now, someday people will be able to turn around, with exactly the
same standards and arguments, and mock the "shoddiness" of linux when it
starts getting infested more often.

Of course, in the meantime, I get a large amount of twisted pleasure out of
watching the rest of the poor school get brought to its knees by the recent
slew of viruses and worms while I sit comfortable and securely behind my
linux boxes.
Perhaps we should just encourage migration to the Commodore 64. I doubt
there's a virus alive that would affect that sucker at all.

Cheers,
