I'm taking American Heritage this semester (just about the worst class
I've ever taken, but that's beside the point), and as many of you know,
students are required to complete a "citizenship project." Most people
in the class are doing retarded stuff, but I figured I might as well do
something worthwhile, something that I'd be interested in doing even if
I weren't in the class, something that other people might want to
participate in.

So here's the project (which due to nepotism will be officially
sponsored by the UUG): let's educate BYU students about digital
freedom--in particular the DMCA. Utah has been getting a bad name with
the likes of McBride, so maybe we can help educate some small number of
people about what's going on in our world.

I don't want to impose too much on the resources of the UUG, so I'm
planning small, though if I get a lot of feedback from UUG-ers that
they're interested in participating I'd be more than happy to expand my
plans.

The idea is to reserve a table at the Wilk where a lot of students in
general will be passing by and distributing a flyer or two about the
DMCA, digital rights, and related issues. If the club is interested, we
could distribute SSS CDs and talk about free software, too. My hope is
that at least a couple of UUG-ers would be able to come help man the
table.

Based on the number of people that would like to help, we'll determine
how long to have the table set-up. At minimum it will be most of a day,
though we could make it longer.

The current date I'm thinking of is Tuesday November 18 (two weeks from
yesterday). I'm going to start working on concepts for flyers, and if
any of you have ideas about what would hit home for BYU students feel
free to let me know (but don't send a finished product as I'm required
to do some work, too).

Please let me know if you're interested or if you have any ideas about
how to improve the project.

Thanks.
