What version of gaim are you using. I've been going to the gaim website and downloading the latest rpm myself every now and then and the latest and greatest usually works great. I would just try doing that.
I've got a better question (I think): What protocol are you being disconnected on? The Yahoo! protocol has been giving me grief lately. Every once in a while IRC cuts out too (but IRC is one of those funky old protocols like FTP). MSN, of course, is flakey sometimes. AIM works great. Jabber just got an overhaul in 0.71 so it's been treating me better.
Gaim itself (UI) has seemed really stable to me.
