Have you seen this site? http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/ It looks like people are having plenty of success. We have an Xbox here at work that my manager won and I've been trying to figure out how to convince the team to put Linux on it, so I've perused the above site. It seems very helpful with step-by-step choose-your-own-adventure like walkthroughs and even a list of people who are willing to have you send them your Xbox and have them do the work of soldering in a mod chip or whatever-for free.
