Agreed, we need to do better with this.

Since this seems at least in part a rebuttal[1] to my earlier message regarding on-topic percentages, I must say in defense that at the time bcr posted his comment, there were only eight messages in one off-topic thread, since Sunday. The remaining 21 off-topic messages since Sunday have been messages about off-topicness including and in response to his message. FWIW
