I'm currently running Gnome 2.4 under Fink/X11. I currently run it in
rootless mode with my OS X dock on the left side of the screen and the
gnome panel on the bottom. When quartz-wm is running, my gnome apps fit
right in, making my OS X experience much more pleasant than it otherwise
would be. I now run galeon as my main browser (which I like better
fontwise than any quartz browser), gaim, and evolution. Life is good.
I'd still rather be running Linux, though, but hey, I knew I was buying
an apple laptop. Some day when Nvidia release their chipset specs I'll
be able to get power management and sleep working under linux...
