Like the others here, I recommend using GoDaddy.com for registering your domain names. The $7 per domain name is definitely worth the freedom to change it as you please. When I first signed up for a hosting company, I had the hosting company register my domain (most companies do it for free to get you to sign up) but later when I wanted to move to a different hosting company, it was hard to switch the domain name through their registrar.

For hosting, I've tried http://www.ipowerweb.com and http://www.lunarpages.com. I've really like Lunar Pages a lot. They have a really good support forum with a lot of traffic. My complaint about them (and ipowerweb.com) is that they don't allow SSH or SFTP connections. If that's not important to you, then Lunar Pages is a great company. They also allow remote connections to the MySQL database so you don't have to make changes through the web interface (phpmyadmin).

Does anyone know a hosting company that allows WebDAV accesss so I can synchronize my iCal calendar (Mac OS X)?

My wife and I are making a "real" web-page for the first time (Angelfire, 50megs, web1000, and BYU web-space not included) and we're planning on registering a domain name, and getting hosting. We probably don't need more then 10 megs for the next year or so.

I've tried googling for domain name registration, but most of the pages seem somewhat unprofessional, and like they're trying to scam someone somehow (putting "no-hidden costs" on the page more than 3 times makes me wary). Price ranges for a .com or .net ranged from $10 to $25 - there's not a difference, is there?

For hosting, we don't need anything fancy. Password protection would be nice and cgi.

Can anyone recommend where to register names, and where to get hosting? Eventually I'll probably run a server ourselves, but for now, it'll be less of a hassle.

Thanks!
