This may not be the answer you're looking for, but you could just download the binary installer, rather than the RPM installer. I've never had any problems with that. The only thing is that you won't be able to update or remove it later using RPM.

Already tried that. It fails like this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] dl # rpm -i jdk-1_5_0-linux-i586.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
       sh-utils >= 2.0-1 is needed by jdk-1.5.0-fcs
       textutils >= 2.0-2 is needed by jdk-1.5.0-fcs
[EMAIL PROTECTED] dl #

I can't find these (remember - I really don't have a clue, so if the
answer is an easy one, please be nice.)

I've looked around and I think coreutils has what I want, but:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] dl # rpm -i coreutils-4.5.3-19.i386.rpm
warning: coreutils-4.5.3-19.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID db42a60e
error: Failed dependencies:
       /sbin/install-info is needed by coreutils-4.5.3-19
       libtermcap.so.2 is needed by coreutils-4.5.3-19
       pam >= 0.66-12 is needed by coreutils-4.5.3-19
[EMAIL PROTECTED] dl #

So... I'm getting tired of RPM_you_know_the_rest, and would like to
use apt-get, but as I mentioned, the only tutorial I can find (and it
looks like a good one, from a good source) won't work.

Thanks for any help you guys can give...

Hey guys!

I've recently switched from Win2k to Linux, and I'm hopping through
distros tying to find the best one for me.

Right now I'm on Yoper (which has been the best so far for me) - but...

I can't get Java 1.5/5.0 installed (I want to have it for CS142 and I
want to stick with Yoper).

With java, if your distro doesn't have a package (and even then the
packages are often just wrappers of the sun installer) goto
http://java.sun.com and download the "Linux self-extracting file" of
Java 5. If you follow the instructions installation should go just fine.
I've installed java a number of times in this fashion, and it works fine
for me.
