I've wondered this as well. School teachers get paid very poorly
compared to the level of service that they preform. I say that after
watching the amout of work my wife would put in to a lesson and the
amout of money that she brought home.

I believe the english saying goes, "the squeaky wheel gets the grease".

I as long as people are willing to pay sports/movie/music stars
salaries by buying their products nothing will change. Those
professions prove an escape from reality, and it appears that society
as a whole values that escape. I'm not saying that
sports/movie/music/etc stars don't work hard, but as you pointed out
society would still continue to function if they didn't exist. I think
fundamentally, it starts by raising children would don't view those
people as "stars".
