I am not an aficionado, but I have installed GRAMPS and am using it so far without problems. I have been able to submit the names of my ansestors to the temple.
I've heard reports that the merging and duplicate finding is, or at least has been, a bit buggy. In my case, this has not been an issue yet - I just have nothing to merge. But when it does become an issue, I hope that with the source around I'd be able to fix it if it does not get fixed by the maintainer by then.
