I believe that there is recent legislation that prevents back-ups of
DVDs of any kind. Although I believe that it is ok to back-up your music
CDs, DVDd are no longer ok. I will talk with my co-worker tomorrow and
see if he has some references pointing to that.

I don't have a DVD to back up, or a dual-layer burner at the moment, I
was just thinking how that would allow you to backup your DVD without
breaking the DMCA. (At least, I think it would).
