There is a much simpler way than all of this. Just ls /etc/*release.
Just about every distro will tell you what release it is there. If you
are not running linux, do an uname -a, and it should tell you what type
of machine it is.
Not quite true, I'm afraid. On my Debian box:
$ls /etc/*release
ls: /etc/*release*: No such file or directory
There is a file in /etc named "debian_version", but all that tells me is
that I'm running unstable.

/proc/version has worked on every Linux box I've tried it on so far.
Granted, I've only tried a handful. :)
