I've been struggling with xgl and compiz on my laptop for some time, but
still haven't really gotten it to work. I saw the cube desktop switcher
once, but all I usually get is a crash (per the log files). X starts up
just fine, and I can get an xterm window, but nothing beyond that. I've
read in a couple of places that xgl/compiz doesn't really work with the
Radeon mobile cards, so I may just be stuck waiting. I'd love to hear if
somebody else has had luck where I've been frustrated so far.
