'lsmod | grep nvidia' returned a few lines, the Device section is
using the 'nvidia' driver, and the module glx is loaded and I don't
see dri in the modules sections.

Is the xorg log found in /var/log? There are no line with (EE) at the beginning.

So we're going to say that it's 'working' - right?

If I'm compiling a 3d/OpenGL engine - where would I get all the dev files from?
