You may disagree with me, but I think that what you recommend should be
the second item of business.  Let me explain.

I've seen projects where there were two or three planning meetings
upfront where all of the goals were determined.  Unfortunately, by the
time any work got done, people were bored.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I think we should get some work done first: spend a
couple of hours and get a proof of concept working.  Make something,
however small, work.  Only then would we have a meeting where we discuss
goals and make a list of tasks, and since there's already something
there, it's easier to avoid getting bored by the meeting.

If we make a drastic change in approach after a week, that's fine, but
at least there's enough momentum to make the change.
