If your interested in building your distro from source, might I suggest 
Gentoo?  It's already set up to do that and has a very robust package 
management system.  Although if we're seeking hardware compatability 
then we have to compile with the most compatible flags for differing 
processors and capabilities so it may not be worth it.  Gentoo does make 
it extremely easy to build a very lean system though.

Pretty slick that you're writing your own package manager though.
