I wonder if your SSH connection dropping is similar to the problem I get with running Unison between my home and lab machines. For those who don't know, Unison is a file synchronization utility, kind of like RSync, except that it keeps track of the state of the directory tree on both ends so it can automatically detect which side has changed without resorting to timestamp heuristics, etc. It uses the RSync protocol over SSH to update files when it detects the changes. Anyway, by default it's set up to start about 15 parallel SSH connections, one per file, to bring the trees up-to-date. As one file transfer completes, it starts another one, until the directory trees are back in sync.
Frequently (on average I'd say around one-to-four times each time I re-sync my trees) after running for a few minutes, my connections will spontaneously go inactive and I'll have to restart Unison. Sometimes if I throttle Unison to use only three or so connections this will help, but sometimes it won't. I've even run into the problem when throttling Unison to only one parallel connection at a time. It never happens when I synchronize between my home machines or out to the off-campus web-servers I have pages on. Anyway, do you think it's a symptom of the same issue? -------------------- BYU Unix Users Group http://uug.byu.edu/ The opinions expressed in this message are the responsibility of their author.
