Yes, I think heat _was_ an issue. I've made strides in it, but smartctl
tells me that the "worst" reading of temperature_celsius was ~55C-60C. This
seems to be the maximum operating temperature as mentioned by Seagate:

wLang=en . I moved some stuff around in the box, created more airways, and
currently they're at 35-40C. I'm monitoring them closely now though.
No hardware sounds (no ticks, etc) and the smartctl health check resulted in
a PASS. I agree though, trying to get the warranty at the first sign of
smoke is a good idea, and I'll pursue it.
I'll look at dd_rescue to get the data.
