I've done something along the lines of using least cost path analysis using the elevation as the cost surface to identify the thalweg. This will follow the lowest elevation from the top to the bottom of the river.

Of course, the elevation of the thalweg changes drastically over this distance. Any ideas on the simplest way to generate the line? I've thought of generating contours and manually selecting (or tracing) the deepest ones, but is there a tool that would do this for me? Thank you!!
