Greg, Been there. Done that. when 2nd started slipping in my 85. Yamaha
sells a gear set to replace weak original components. You may need a shift
fork and drum also. U-joint slips right off drive shaft and stays with
engine.

I used a combination of floor jack and hoist from the roof joist of my shop
to swing engine out and in. While working on tranny I hung engine above
work bench with a nylon sling around cylinders. Dropped bottom half off
engine without disturbing top end. (it can be done!) You can even install
new main bearings without removing cam chains etc, or otherwise messing with
top end of engine. Contact me at e-mail address if you have any questions.

Well it looks like I am going to have to pull the motor on my 85 max.I have
lost fifth gear. The yamaha service manual I have fails to mention anything
about the U- joint in the engine removal section, are there any tips I
should no about this. And once I get the engine ready for removal is there
any easier ways to go about this like using some kind of hoist or somthing
because that motor looks like one heavy S.O.B. Thanks.
