Indeed !! .......

Bill,
FYI ... I have found I can induce the most horrifying tapping noises, (don't ask me how I know this please .. sigh ..), by grossly mis-adjusting carb synchronization, (not really that gross ... as little as 5cm ... it would make you think you needed new rod bearings or that a clearance disc had fallen out of a lifter) ... Also, a minor exhaust leak at the head will create a most profound ticking that will go and come depending on the size of the leak and the temperature of the head pipe. Loose spark plugs will do the same .. or running Mario's brand of motor oil ... etc ...... If you ever owned a BSA or a Virago this wouldn't bother you a bit !!

Subject: Re: When (or who) to rebuild a motor?

Bill, find another mechanic, 10 years exp. and say's rebuild the motor for a intermittent tapping sound he can't find, ask around your area and find a shop that's work on lots of Venture's(basically same motor) maybe there you will find someone who can find the tapping??

I purchased a '96 V-Max in showroom shape with 4500 miles.
My Yamaha mechanic (for 10 years) hears a valve tap noise that comes and
goes.  He has checked everything down to cam chain adjuster but can't find
the root cause for the noise.  My mechanic now suggests rebuilding the
engine.
