Glad you got a laugh out of my raving. I know better than anyone about
the endless
pit. My credit card, cheque-book and anything else that has some form of
equity in
it is permanently buried in our business and particularly Drag race
cars. That's one
of the reasons I don't wish to get overly interested in modifying my
Max. The
exhaust was essential, so I could have that V8 sound. Obviously then
optimising the
tuning is reasonably important. I still haven't checked for binding of
the slides
due to the tied springs. I believe you are right, so I will take you up
on your
offer in regard to the cut down springs, but you only need send them to
California
for me. I've been dealing with a guy there for over 25 years and he
sends us regular
air freight shipments every 5-6 weeks or so and he can throw them in one
of the
cartons. If you need payment for them you can send them UPS cod if you
like.
His details are as follows:
Marvin Miller Manufacturing
12347 Penn St. Whittier, California 90602
Contact there is, Gene. His phone # is (562)693-8235
Just send them to him care of my name and he will put them in with my
next shipment.
This will save overseas postage and hassles for you, not that it is
difficult to
send postage over here but it's easier for you this way and just as
effective for
me.
In relation to the tuning methods, I'm going to go to the local bike
dyno next week
as my weekend was messed up by a headshake on the bike which was
predominately the
result of problems with the front wheel bearings. They felt O.K when I
got them out
but have tightened up over time and just don't feel right. I replaced
them and the
oil seals and the problem is very much improved. The rest of the shake
is simply
loose head bearings. I have a washer from Paul Sayegh so I will do the
Furber fix
and adjust the head bearings pretty soon.
On the dyno I will take my air/fuel ratio monitor which uses a wide
ranging O2
sensor threaded into a piece of pipe which I simply need to shove into
one of the
cans. It will let me know if the #155 jets which I fitted have helped
the full
throttle power. Personally your theory about the slides not opening
fully to cause
the low top end speed is definitely possible but the stock mains may
also contribute
in too lean a mixture. The plugs did look lean after the runs I had,
once again you
could be more right in the slides causing this. At the dyno I will
simply untie the
springs after the first run and see what happens on the second.
My meter is pretty accurate giving a real time # in actual a/f ratio
rather than
displaying voltage values. I use it on our engine dyno for optimising
local GM fuel
injected engines. We can modify the program in stock Delco ECU's in real
time, it's
great. You don't get your hands dirty changing jets, or distributor
advance curves,
just a few keystrokes.
Thanks for offering all this assistance and hide your credit cards like
me. I get
tempted everyday looking through the V-Max posts but to be honest I'm
waiting for
Yamaha to release a fully revamped Max for this new millenium, I'm
probably dreaming
but that's one of the main reasons I'm holding off doing a lot more mods
to this
one. Anyway, I will wait this year till the new 2001 is released, if
it's the same
deal without major changes then the money I'm putting aside now each
week will go
towards mods instead of a new bike. I'm patient but I am growing tired
of Yamaha's
inaction.

Thanks again
Sam Blumenstein
