Wayne, I would try other grips before you start changing components. 
I'm using Sunline Grand Touring Grips which are tapered at each end. 
They allow an easier reach to the levers.  I have them on all my street
bikes.  I got mine locally for about $8.  Dennis Kirk also has them.
