A too-rich engine will indeed run cooler IN THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER, but a
certain amount of combustion MAY continue in the pipes, ergo, (you're
right), too rich makes an engine run cooler, but can paradoxically result in
higher exhaust pipe temperatures. Unfortunately, complete combustion does
not ever take place in the combustion chamber regardless of mixture. Some
approximations are better than others, of course.
