Yes, I remember you mentioning that, Patrick. Mine was hot enough that
I don't think it would have made a significant difference if that shield
was gone. It was melting through the shield AND the battery box!
Since reading someone's recent comment about not leaving the engine
idling with the choke on (because the rich mixture would finish burning
in the exhaust pipe), I think that's what happened to mine. I had just
started the bike and was warming it up, and had probably left the choke
on, at least partway. I'm glad for the ceramic coating on the
pipes--not a trace of discoloration.
